Dubai shopping centre wins sustainability rating

A shopping centre in Dubai has won a prestigious global certification for being sustainable.

City Centre Mirdif was awarded the Leadership in Energy & Environmental Design (LEED) Gold EBOM (Existing Buildings Operation and Maintenance) certification.

It is the US Green Building Council's programme that recognises best-in-class building strategies and practices.

Majid Al Futtaim, which owns the shopping centre, said the operations team, retailers and brands supported efforts to achieve targets across 110 areas, including water efficiency, waste management and efficient energy management.

It is said to be 40% more energy efficient than other shopping centres in the region and its tenant engagement programme to reduce costs helped save $350,000 (£224,000) a year.

Alain Bejjani, CEO of Majid Al Futtaim Holding said: "By embedding sustainability in our business we increase the value of our brand, boost long-term profitability, create new business opportunities and maintain our talented workforce."

London’s “Walkie Talkie” tower was recently recognised as one of the most sustainable buildings in the capital.
