Total to set sail with LNG-powered crude carriers

Total Group is set to launch its first two Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) powered VLCCs (Very Large Crude Carrier).

The two vessels can carry up to 300,000 tonnes of crude oil and will be delivered by 2022 to join Total’s time-chartered fleet.

In contrast to heavy fuel oil ships, the VLCCs are expected to cut fine particle emissions by 99% and greenhouse emissions by 20%.

Luc Gillet, Senior Vice-President Shipping at Total, said: “LNG is the best and immediately available solution to reduce the environmental footprint of shipping. The use of LNG to fuel our chartered vessels is the illustration of our determination to reduce the carbon footprint of our activities.

“With this decision, we reaffirm today our positive contribution to a sustainable shipping industry and our commitment to extend the use of LNG as a clean marine fuel.”
