Biogas and biomethane could lower the UK's greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by as much as 13% and provide a valuable contribution towards reaching net zero by 2050.
This is according to a recent study by the European Biogas Association (EBA), that states biogas and biomethane could replace fossil fuels and expand renewable energy use in cooking, transportation, power generation and heating applications.
The study notes that biogas and biomethane production could respectively cut 240% and 202% of greenhouse gas emissions in some roles if they directly replaced fossil fuels.
The report notes some of the added benefits include capturing methane from animal manure to generate renewable energy and using biomethane to produce green fertilisers
