Spanish multinational telecommunications company Telefónica has committed to bringing its net zero target forward to 2030, 20 years earlier than initially planned.
In 2019, the company avoided 3.2 million tonnes of carbon dioxide worldwide and saved a total of almost three and half tonnes for every tonne emitted.
The objective for 2025 is to avoid ten tonnes of carbon dioxide for every tonne emitted while covering 85% of its electricity needs from renewable sources.
Last year, the firm achieved a global reduction of almost 50% of emissions, achieving its commitment set for 2025.
Telefónica's COO, Ángel Vilá, commented: "Telefónica wants to accelerate the opportunity to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions as soon as possible.
"Digitalisation is essential to decarbonise the economy and is part of the solution. The digital solutions we offer our customers, as well as the greater efficiency of our networks, are helping to reduce emissions."
