John Lewis puts landfill waste to bed with vegan-friendly, fully-recyclable mattress

John Lewis has unveiled its first vegan-friendly, fully-recyclable mattress, which is now available online and in its stores.

The EcoMattress, which is manufactured in the UK in a circular, carbon-neutral factory, is designed to reduce waste and minimise pollution.

Completely glue and chemical-free, it has no materials sourced from animals and its polyester filling is made from 100% recycled fibres - a king-size version of the mattress uses more than 200 recycled plastic bottles that otherwise could have been sent to landfill.

The retailer notes the UK currently sends around 7.5 million mattresses to landfill each year and says it hopes to help significantly reduce this number.

Emily Wimbourne, Partner & Bed Buyer said: “We are a business led by purpose and with customers becoming more thoughtful about the environment, we want to make it easier for them to shop sustainably. Over the past year, we have seen online searches for ‘sustainable’ increase by 42% and ‘eco’ by 26%.”

The EcoMattress is being sold at a price of £599 for a double and £699 for a king-size.
