Centrica: ‘We can support almost every element outlined in Energy White Paper’

The government has launched its long-awaited Energy White Paper to clean up the nation's energy systems and ensure the journey to net zero by 2050 is achievable and affordable.

The white paper expands on Prime Minister Boris Johnson's recently announced Ten Point Plan for a Green Industrial Revolution and sets out the steps needed to cut emissions from industry, transport and buildings by 230 million metric tonnes.

Chris O’Shea, Centrica Group CEO, said: “We’re in a unique position because we can support the Government on almost every element outlined in the Energy White Paper, to achieve net zero.

“We’re pleased to see commitments to update the energy system to introduce flexibility and more low carbon solutions such as hydrogen, as well as the focus on making net zero possible for households through low-carbon heating pathways, the growth of EVs, support for vulnerable customers, and a continued focus on energy efficiency – smart systems in particular.

“There is an opportunity to look at hydrogen storage alongside hydrogen production. With the right support in place, the Rough field can be repurposed to support a hydrogen economy and meet the gas security challenge, while creating thousands of jobs in the North East.”
