Somalia to receive £5.5m UK aid to fight drought

The UK has announced a further £5.5 million in aid for Somalia to combat drought.

This is on top of the £7.4 million announced in January by the UK’s Minister for Africa, Vicky Ford last month, as the African nation continues to suffer famine and supply issues.

More than 270,000 Somalians have abandoned their homes to find water and food, making the country the most impacted by drought on the continent.

Close to three million are already displaced due to prior humanitarian crises and the impacts of climate change on food accessibility.

Nick Dyer, UK Special Envoy for Famine Prevention and Humanitarian Affairs, who announced the funding, said: “We know from 2017 when we and partners acted early, lives were saved. We can and must provide the assistance that the most vulnerable need and save lives.”
