Airlines announce large carbon offsetting drive

Some of the world’s largest airlines including Air Canada, EasyJet, Luthfansa, Virgin Atlantic and plane manufacturer Airbus have committed to heavy carbon offsetting schemes for air travel.

From 2025, the agreed parties will only purchase “verified and durable carbon removal credits.”

Airbus, specifically, is looking to purchase 400,000 tonnes of carbon credits across four years from Oxy Low Carbon Ventures – which is currently constructing a carbon capture unit in Texas that will remove one million tonnes of carbon dioxide once operational in 2024.

Aviation is responsible for 3% of the world’s carbon emissions – and there are hopes that utilising carbon capture technologies can help airlines to quash the footprint of their flights.
